Day trip to Taupo

Taupo is one of New Zealands premier tourist and holiday spots. It is an exiting place, a beautiful spot and of coarse Taupo Lake is enchanting with the mountains in the background. Dare I say it but Taupo itself as a town and places of interest is actually not up to the varied places and sites of interest as say Rotorua. BUT around Taupo there are great places to see. Taupo itself has excellent cafe's and restaurants and for a day out is a great place to go.

Leaving Katikati drive to Tauranga and Mt Maunganui. Follow signs to Te Puke and Whakatane. This excellent  road takes you down the eastern coast and take the turnoff to Rotorua. This brings you out on the eastern side of the lake. Follow signs to Taupo. This is a wide open  road, just sit back and enjoy the drive. Scenery is great and the traffic is light.

Coming into Taupo you pass the Huka Falls. This is a must stop. Truly magnificent to see. The whole Waikato River is squeezed through a narrow gorge. On the same entrance road is the Craters of the Moon. You may wish to see these on the way back. This is an area of intense volcanic activity and the easy walk through this field is a pleasure but stay on the tracks.
