The Coromandel Peninsular

This scenic finger of land reaching into the sea is part of the Pacific Coast Highway. The dramatic coast, beautiful beaches and rugged ranges makes it one of New Zealand's best loved holiday spots. The coastline is ideal for diving, fishing, surfing, kayaking and boating.

Day trip from Kaimai view, Katikati.

Waihi is 15min from Katikati and has an excellent gold mining museum and also the open cast mine is well worth seeing. Tours of the mines can be arranged at Kaimai view. The Karangahake Gorge is a must see with it's many walking tracks and tunnels.

At Waihi is the road junction that takes you up the Peninsular. First is Whangamata. A beautiful long white sand beach and Hauturu Island which can be walked to at low tide. Leaving Whangamata you drive 34 kms through forests to reach Tairua and it's lovely harbour and beaches. Close to Tairua is Pauanui, an up market resort town with pure white sandy beaches. From Tairua you drive approx 25kms to a road junction at Whenuakite. Here you turn right to travel to Hot Water Beach. At low tide you can dig in the sand and relax in the pools of hot thermal water. From Hot Water Beach you travel a short distance to Hahei, a popular beach resort and then onto Cook's Beach. Here you can take a car ferry to Whitianga, another very popular beach town. From Whitianga, 11kms takes you to Kuaotunu and then another 29kms to Coromandel Town.

From Coromandel you have choices to which way back you want to go. Kaimai view will supply you with more information and maps.
