![]() |
Kauri Point offers a varied walk through the historic
reserve, showing pa fortifications and lovely examples of pohutakawa
forest fringing the harbour's edge.
Take Kauri Point Rd off SH2 north of Katikati , turn right at the very end and follow the road down past the toilets to a parking area. From here Kauri Point jetty extends 196 metres out into the harbour channel and is a very popular fishing spot. The walkway is accessed adjacent to the car park and follows the harbour edge through pohutakawa forest, round the point and then into paddocks which form part of the reserve. Pa fortifications and trenches are obvious in this area and should be treated with respect. From here, cross to Esplanade Road or follow the fence line adjacent to the harbour. At the northern end of the point drop down to Ongare Point (10 min walk) or continue back to the carpark via Chelmsford St.
